Book Title: Overcoming the Seven Deadly Emotions
Subtitle: Anger, Fear, Shame, Stress, Lust, Jealousy & Pride. Author: Michelle BorquezThere is something to say about Michelle Borquez's style of writing and it is; 'Wow!'
Let me tell you that is not an exaggeration. I have read, reviewed and edited tons of written materials by many authors but Michelle takes one of the top spots for being honest, candid, genuine and forthcoming. I had just read the book halfway when I sent an email to Michelle saying that her book is so authentic, helpful for so many men and women living with deadly emotions every single day.
I find her treatment of topic such as; 'How to deal with emotions, The Face of Fear, Power of Jealousy, Deception of Lust, Burden of Stress, torment of Anger, The bondage of Shame, The Loneliness of Pride very sound and her treatise of overcoming and breaking free of the deadly emotions very REAL! Her personal confessions are encouraging and featuring the stories of other people in showcasing her point is not only intelligent but smart.
She wrote excellently from a Christian perspective and succeeded where most Christian writers fail which is the area of excessive scripture quoting rather than smack us bang in the face with where we need to grow and change without making Biblical excuses or over ironing the truth.
I would not blame you if you feel that as a book review editor, I am rather kind to Michelle for her writing style and content but this is what Lance Ivy of Keller, Texas wrote in his review of the same book:
“In her book, Overcoming The Seven Deadly Emotions, Michelle Borquez presents sound and simple principles that produce enduring emotional strength and health. Her book negotiates through the forest of emotional challenges and clears a path that will bring sustained peace and internal security. One by one, she identifies seven deadly, life controlling emotions, explains the destructive nature of each one, gives practical illustrations of the negative and positive sides of these emotions and outlines realistic action steps to walk free of our emotional limitations and prisons.
As a minister and in serving as part of a pastoral staff, I personally encounter people who are dealing with a wide range of emotional issues. This book presents a vivid and valid hope to the tormented soul, but also contributes to the blueprint and strategic plan for those desiring to grow, mature and develop a greater, more godly lifestyle, grow more purposeful lives and enhance the quality of relationships in their lives.
Becoming established as an overcomer of even one of these deadly emotions is worth far more than the invested cost of acquiring this book. In fact, reading and applying the principles and truths found in each chapter can be likened to being personally mentored and counseled by a skilled and compassionate emotional health care practitioner.

In the 5th chapter, titled The Deception of Lust, we find conventional wisdom and counsel regarding our attitude in being walked through to our own personal, emotional strength, or in helping walk others through to freedom. The book speaks of how Jesus would address the sin of a person in contrast to the approach of many churches or believers: "Unfortunately, we pile more shame and judgment on these wounded souls instead of saying, 'Let me walk beside you in the areas of freedom you are pursuing. Let me be here and be strength to you, and even if you end up falling, I will be here to walk with you as you gain strength.' Jesus did this with people" (Page 88)
The author's insights interpret the emotional paths people take in living their daily lives and suggests new and better courses in which to steer our lives. In the chapter on The Torment of Anger, she addresses the fact that "feelings of perceived injustice...becomes a setup for unhappiness and a permanent state of dissatisfaction and anger." (Page 111) One emphasis of this chapter is to understand the difference between being a victim of circumstances versus being responsible for our attitudes, decisions, behaviors and actions that follow a perceived or real injustice. With a transcendent openness and transparency, Michelle shares her own battles to being an emotional overcomer. Michelle's personal life experiences teaches how to rise above cruelty and injustice, or even our own life-altering decisions and behaviors, to find and stand in a place of peace and wholeness.
In the final analysis, every one of us has faced, are facing or will face all of these emotions at some point in our lives and to varying degrees. This book gently, but firmly focuses the reader to look into the mirror and explore their own heart and lives to resist denial of personal responsibility and to embrace the help of God, His word and the cross of Jesus Christ.
The journey to greater and greater levels of emotional security, stability and wholeness may be on-going, but Overcoming The Seven Deadly Emotions is a vital and enduring tool to survive and thrive through the journey. Because it respectfully and unashamedly points to the standard of truth found in the Word of God and found in relationship with Jesus Christ, this book is a valuable weapon to fight off and overcome the emotional difficulties of life and all its circumstances.
After having read this book in its entirety, my life has been personally enriched. Both personally, and as the director of a Bible school and Christian Education Director at my church, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to any person facing emotional turmoil, and to Christians of all levels.” Says Lance Ivey!
